Extracurricular Activities
GEMS International School
At GIS we believe that Extra Curricular Activities (ECAs) are an important part of the overall school offerings. They provide an opportunity for students to develop a range of attributes which are integral within an IB education. Activities in our ECA program will offer students a wide range of experiences helping them to develop the skills and passion to pursue different areas of learning. We provide our students with opportunities to take part in sporting activities as part of our ECA program. We believe in the value of team and individual sports and healthy competition. We know these experiences will provide our students with valuable life lessons and the opportunities to encounter success. We recognize the importance of mother tongue maintenance and development of literacy skills. We also understand how this benefits students in developing their English language skills.

Over the last few years, we have seen a huge growth in the GIS Jaguars Sports Program. We had over 50 teams competing in many different competitions across Dubai in the 2018/19 academic year. The GIS Jaguars have competed in the DAPSA and DASSA leagues (the Dubai Affiliated Primary and Secondary School Leagues), the GEMS Sports Series, and the Athletes in Schools Super Sixes. Over 300 students represented the school from Grades 2-12, which equates to 25% of the student body.
We believe that all students should get the chance to train as part of a Jaguars squad, and where possible, we try and ensure that all students have the opportunity to compete for the school in external events.
The GIS competitive sports program has continued to grow year on year over the past number of years. We now have both boys and girls teams competing in multiple sports from U9-U19 level. A number of Jaguar teams have been promoted from their respective DASSA divisions and we continue to look at new sports to introduce at a competitive level.
Over the past number of years GIS has put a focus on improving female participation in sport. In Term 1 of 2021-22 Academic Year our U19 Girls Football team won their division by going unbeaten for the entirety of their season.
