Chinese Language Is Set To Become Regular In Saudi’s Educational Institutes

Recently, an agreement was signed between the Saudi Arabian and Chinese education ministries. In the agreement, Saudi Arabia stated that it will soon start teaching Chinese language and literature as a part of its educational curriculum in schools and other educational institutes. In accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding, all educational institutions will also train Saudi teachers in the Chinese language, teaching methodologies, and culture. This is a significant step as Saudi Arabia is China's top trading partner in West Asia.

Mohammed Asiri, an assistant professor of International Commercial Law at King Abdulaziz University, stated that learning Chinese will also advance trade ties between the two nations. He also mentioned that Chinese will quickly progress to become one of the most influential languages in the future. He further added that, in progressive countries, political leaders are proud of their children's ability to speak Chinese. He also mentioned that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman proposed the idea of adding the Chinese language to the Saudi Arabian educational curriculum in 2019.

According to a Chinese instructor at King Abdulaziz University, Bowen Li, Chinese is one of the six official working languages of the UN and is spoken by around 20% of the world's population. Bowen Li also quoted President Xi Jinping, who said that language is the finest way to comprehend a nation. Mr Li further added to this and said that through the "Chinese Bridge" curriculum and learning Chinese, students can get knowledge of the diverse, vibrant, and rich culture of China.

Besides language experts and teachers, students also hold a similar view. According to King Abdulaziz University student Abeer Al-Ghamdi, she opted to study Chinese because it is the most spoken language in the world. According to Ms Al-Ghamdi, there will be countless career prospects in translation, education, and tourism if she learns Chinese and works with the Chinese economy.

This initiative also holds significance in light of the recent massive inundation of Chinese investment firms in Saudi Arabia. This step will further make it easier for businesses to collaborate. This agreement is expected to usher in a new era between the two countries as learning Chinese expands opportunities for collaboration for businesses and improves knowledge and cultural exchange between them.
