The Ministry of Education in the United Arab Emirates is introducing a new model that will let students in the general and advanced streams in public and private schools that follow the ministry's curriculum choose extra subjects.
Students can create their own educational path using the model by selecting classes that are appropriate for their academic standing and skills. The decision, in accordance with the ministry, will only be applicable to 11th graders in the academic year 2023–2024 and will thereafter be applicable to both 11th and 12th students starting in the 2024–2025 academic year.
Using the best international standards and practices, the Ministry of Education has decided to strengthen the educational system by implementing the optional subject model, according to Minister of Education Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi. This new model is more adaptable and considers each student's particular strengths, enabling them to advance their knowledge and abilities. Students will have the knowledge they need to pursue their desired academic specializations in higher education if they accomplish this.
He highlighted that the new model will allow schools the opportunity to create academic or skill curricula tailored to students' requirements and to provide more efficient academic monitoring.
Dr. Al Falasi asserts that the idea of elective subjects will assist the country's educational system advance so that student potential is better met and they are given the opportunity to thrive in both their academic and professional careers. He went on to say that they are hoping to encourage parents and kids to participate more actively in the educational process by using the Electives Model. Periodic reviews of the new model's implementation will involve all schools and the relevant authorities in order to monitor its development and improve its outcomes.
In accordance with the Elective Subjects' Model, eleventh-graders in the general and advanced streams starting in the academic year 2024-2025 will be required to complete six Compulsory Academic Subjects: Arabic language, Islamic Studies, Social Studies/Moral Education, English language, Mathematics, and Physical and Health Education. For the remaining fields, there will be two sets of electives. The introductory science course covers biology, chemistry, and physics. The second set of electives consists of computing, creative design and innovation, health sciences, and the arts.
According to its curriculum standards, the Ministry has said that the targeted learning outcomes would continue to be included in the electives model. Students can choose a study schedule based on their interests, academic standing, and future chances for further education. Each student will take a different set of subjects and classes depending on their desired plan.
